CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL TO AWARD FASTEST QUALIFIER AT HYUNDAI MONTEREY SPORTS CAR CHAMPIONSHIP

In a reversal of philosophy, the California Highway Patrol will reward the fastest driver who qualifies in the Hyundai Monterey Sports Car Championship. The CHP Pole Award will be presented at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on Sunday, Nov. 1 to the driver who secures the pole position in the powerful Daytona Prototype International (Dpi) class, which is the top-tier racing class featured in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

The CHP has been an enthusiastic supporter of the IMSA race and the skills it takes to compete at the highest level. An impressive succession of drivers have earned the CHP Pole Award bragging rights since it was first awarded in 2009 to Gil de Ferran, who went on to win the race.

Qualifying is a nerve-wracking process wherein all elements of the driver, team and car come together to lay down that perfect lap. Receiving the CHP Pole Award is even more important for drivers at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. The technical track is known for its lower grip and more challenging passing zones, which provides fans with very intense racing action.

Safety is one of the CHP’s primary missions and it applauds the professional drivers who so skillfully demonstrate a commitment to safety. By continuing to award the CHP Pole Award, they not only congratulate the driver and team for their achievement, but also convey to our community that safety comes first.

The CHP Pole Award is one of many programs underway that support and showcase the Designated Driver Program aimed at reducing DUI-related traffic accidents.
